DLEAG ARRESTS 53-YEAR-OLD NIGERIAN WITH 9,020 ECSTASY TABLETS, SUSPECTED DRUG-MAKING EQUIPMENT

The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), has arrested a 53-year-old Nigerian national following the seizure of 9,020 suspected ecstasy tablets, quantities of suspected cannabis ruderalis, commonly known as skunk, and equipment believed to be associated with the manufacturing and processing of illicit drugs.

The suspect, identified as Celestine Ikenna Godwin, was arrested on 24 August 2026, according to information released by DLEAG.

The Agency described the discovery of the suspected drug-processing equipment as particularly significant, noting that it is the first case of its kind recorded by DLEAG in The Gambia.

According to the Agency, the discovery has raised concerns over the possibility that clandestine facilities could be established in the country for the production and processing of synthetic drugs.

DLEAG said the suspect remains in its custody as investigations continue. Investigators are reportedly working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the seized drugs and equipment, as well as determine whether other individuals or organised networks may be connected to the suspected operation.

The development comes amid continued efforts by Gambian law-enforcement authorities to combat the trafficking, distribution and abuse of illicit drugs, particularly synthetic substances that have increasingly become a concern across the region.

DLEAG said the operation demonstrates its determination not only to disrupt the trafficking of illicit drugs into The Gambia but also to prevent attempts to establish local facilities for the production or processing of such substances.

The Agency has appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information to law-enforcement authorities regarding suspected drug-related activities.

DLEAG further emphasised the importance of community cooperation in combating drug trafficking and protecting communities, particularly young people, from the potentially devastating consequences of drug abuse.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
