The United States Department of Justice has initiated denaturalisation proceedings against former Gambian soldier Babucarr Mboob, accusing him of concealing his alleged involvement in serious human rights abuses committed during the regime of former Gambian president Yahya Jammeh.
According to a statement released by the US Department of Justice, Mboob, 58, is accused of illegally obtaining American citizenship by allegedly withholding material facts and wilfully misrepresenting his military background during his immigration and naturalisation process.
US authorities alleged that while serving as a military police officer in the Gambian Armed Forces, Mboob participated alongside other soldiers in the execution of six military officers suspected of plotting a coup against the Jammeh government. Prosecutors said the killings were carried out without trial under orders from senior military commanders.
The Department of Justice stated that Mboob entered the United States in 2002 and later became a naturalised US citizen in 2011. However, investigators alleged that he failed to disclose his alleged involvement in acts described as war crimes and persecution during the immigration process.
The accusations against Mboob resurfaced following testimony he reportedly gave before Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission on April 9, 2019. During the hearings, Mboob admitted participating in the execution of six fellow officers linked to an alleged coup plot.
The victims were identified as Lt. Gibril Saye, Lt. Buba Jammeh, Lt. Bakary Manneh, Cadet Amadou Sillah and Lt. Abdoulie Bah. Mboob reportedly told the commission he could not recall the identity of the sixth victim.
US prosecutors said the case against Mboob forms part of a broader crackdown involving 11 other individuals accused of offences ranging from war crimes to terrorism-related activities and child sexual abuse.
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said individuals implicated in grave crimes should never have been granted American citizenship.
He stated that the US government is committed to protecting the integrity of its immigration system and ensuring that anyone who intentionally concealed criminal activities or provided false information during naturalisation faces legal consequences.
Mboob, originally from Ndungu Kebbeh, joined the Gambian military in 1991 before later relocating to the United States.
