The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has released a formal statement addressing allegations currently circulating on social media concerning former Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General (Retired) Mamat O.A. Cham, which have been brought to light by his former Personal Assistant, ex-Sergeant Saine Modou.

The military contends that these allegations, which have sparked considerable public discourse and contributed to Lt. Gen. Cham’s resignation from his role as Chief of Defence Staff, remain unverified and lack any definitive evidence.

In its statement, the GAF underscored its standing as one of the most esteemed institutions within the nation, having established a reputation for professionalism, discipline, and adherence to constitutional governance over the years. The Armed Forces indicated that independent studies of public opinion, including assessments conducted by the Centre for Policy Research and Strategic Studies (CEPRASS), have consistently ranked the military among the most reputable public and security institutions within The Gambia.

Acknowledging the gravity of the allegations and the necessity to sustain public trust in the institution, President Adama Barrow, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of The Gambia Armed Forces, has mandated the formation of an independent Board of Inquiry (BOI) to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

The leadership of the military has asserted that it will refrain from preemptively judging the investigation’s results, allowing the Board of Inquiry to execute its duties impartially, thoroughly, and transparently.

Furthermore, the GAF reassured the public that all personnel within the Armed Forces, irrespective of their rank or position, are bound by established ethical standards, administrative protocols, and military codes of conduct. The High Command has affirmed its commitment to operating within the principles of discipline, professionalism, accountability, and military propriety.

Officials also emphasized that these allegations have not compromised the operational integrity of the Armed Forces nor disrupted the chain of command. The institution maintains that its leadership structures remain intact and fully operational, with no detriment to command cohesion or routine military undertakings.

As the investigation unfolds, the GAF has urged the public to exercise patience and allow for due process to be observed.

In conclusion, the Armed Forces reiterated their dedication to upholding the Constitution, safeguarding national interests, and ensuring the welfare of military personnel. The institution committed to continue its service to the nation with integrity, professionalism, and dedication while preserving the reputation and integrity of The Gambia Armed Forces.
