Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, the Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, has offered a robust defense of President Adama Barrow in light of criticism from certain political commentators regarding the President’s engagement in a football celebration. Dr. Ceesay described such criticisms as misdirected and out of touch with the realities of effective governance.

Dr. Ceesay articulated that President Barrow’s enthusiasm for football is widely recognized and shared among numerous Gambians, who view the sport as a significant factor for fostering national unity, social cohesion, and collective pride.

“It is regrettable that some political figures are attempting to create controversy from a moment intended for national unity and celebration,” the Minister asserted.

He further contended that the act of commemorating a sporting success does not imply that the President has neglected his duties or is oblivious to the pressing challenges faced by the nation. Dr. Ceesay argued that the assessment of leadership should focus on tangible outcomes and achievements, rather than on efforts to construct political narratives surrounding benign social engagements.

The Minister highlighted the considerable developmental advancements achieved under President Barrow’s administration, which include substantial investments in road infrastructure, bridge construction, expansion of electricity access, healthcare improvements, development of educational facilities, water supply projects, and ongoing economic reforms.

Additionally, he underscored that the government is committed to executing strategic energy initiatives aimed at enhancing electrical accessibility throughout the nation, while also introducing measures to mitigate the impact of global economic pressures and external disruptions on citizens.

Dr. Ceesay posited that the assertion suggesting a President cannot celebrate a sporting victory while simultaneously managing the nation’s affairs is both irrational and misleading.

“No leader globally is expected to distance themselves from sporting, cultural, or social activities solely due to existing challenges. Effective governance demands a balance between responsibilities and engagement with the populace, particularly during moments that foster communal unity,” he elaborated.

The Minister maintained that the Gambian people comprehend that governmental efforts can simultaneously pursue national development objectives while celebrating occasions that inspire unity and joy among citizens.

He emphasized that the critical inquiry should not revolve around whether President Barrow engaged in a football celebration but rather whether his administration is effecting substantive improvements in the lives of Gambians.

“The evidence of progress is evident nationwide, reflected in the ongoing construction of roads, schools, expansion of healthcare facilities, investments in electricity, and recorded economic growth,” Dr. Ceesay observed.

In reaffirming the government’s dedication to democratic principles and constructive critique, the Minister urged caution against efforts to politicize private and innocuous celebrations.

He contended that such distractions contribute minimally to addressing national challenges and serve only to divert focus from the essential duties of nation-building and development.

Dr. Ceesay concluded by urging Gambians to concentrate on constructive dialogue, national advancement, and collective progress rather than what he characterized as “manufactured outrage” that seeks to create unwarranted political tensions.

“The Gambia requires solutions rather than manufactured controversies. Our emphasis should remain on development, unity, and the continued advancement of our nation,” the Minister asserted.
