In a formal statement released on Wednesday, the hospital clarified that blood donation on a voluntary basis is entirely free, asserting that no contributors to the hospital’s blood bank are required to incur any expenses.

KGH attributed the confusion to a misunderstanding between voluntary blood donors and replacement donors—individuals, such as relatives or friends, who donate specifically to assist a patient in need of a transfusion.

For replacement donors, the hospital indicated that fees related to laboratory services, such as blood grouping (D200) and cross-matching (D300), are charged to the transfusion recipient rather than the blood donor. It was also highlighted that certain groups, including pregnant women, women in labor, and postnatal mothers presenting a valid National Identification Card or National Health Insurance Card, are exempt from these charges.

Regarding the incident that ignited the online debate, KGH specified that the patient in question was a 22-year-old lacking a valid National Identification Card, which resulted in the application of standard laboratory fees consistent with the hospital’s User Fee Policy.

“The fees pertained to laboratory services rendered to the patient and were not associated with the blood donation process,” the statement clarified, reaffirming that no request for payment was made to the blood donor at any point.

The hospital expressed its apprehension over the dissemination of incomplete and misleading information in social media outlets. Although the publisher later acknowledged that the claims had not been substantiated through independent verification and welcomed the hospital’s clarifications, KGH noted that no attempts were made to consult with hospital management prior to the release of the information.
