Wuli East NAM Hails Enduring Gambia–Cuba Brotherhood at Fidel Castro Centenary Tree-Planting Ceremony

At a tree-planting ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s birth, the National Assembly Member for Wuli East, Hon. Suwaibou Touray, highlighted the robust and lasting relationship between The Gambia and Cuba. Speaking at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul on August 13, 2026, Hon. Touray, who also serves as Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), emphasized that the tree planted in honor of the late Cuban leader symbolized more than a mere ceremony. It represented a profound symbol of the historical friendship and shared struggles that have bound the two nations.

Hon. Touray described the initiative as a celebration of the “enduring friendship and life” between the two nations, acknowledging Cuba’s significant historical support for Africa’s anti-colonial movements and its ongoing commitment to economic liberation. He also conveyed greetings on behalf of Hon. Madi MK Ceesay, Chairperson of the Cuba/Gambia Parliamentary Group, who was unable to attend due to the National Assembly’s recess.

Representing the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Hon. Touray extended warm fraternal greetings to Cuba, asserting that Cuba should be recognized not just as a friend but as a vital ally and partner whose solidarity with African liberation efforts is deeply valued. He pointed out that while many African nations have attained political independence, the pursuit of economic self-sufficiency continues, underscoring the necessity of strong international partnerships.

According to Hon. Touray, the tree-planting ceremony embodied the principle of “harmony without uniformity,” a concept that teaches the importance of tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. He stated that The Gambia and Cuba have successfully upheld these principles in their relationship, founded on friendship, reciprocity, sincerity, and inclusivity, advocating for their continued guidance in bilateral affairs.

The Wuli East representative called for a more expansive and strategic approach to Gambia-Cuba relations, encouraging both countries to assess the evolving global landscape and identify new avenues for economic collaboration, trade, and development. He expressed confidence that a revitalized engagement could foster unprecedented economic exchanges between Banjul and Havana, especially through enhanced cooperation in areas of shared interest.

Hon. Touray characterized the tree dedicated to Fidel Castro as a living testament to their friendship and a commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation.
