The opposition United Democratic Party has announced the passing of its National President of the Women’s Wing, Aja Sukaina Kah, describing her death as a major loss to the party and the nation.

According to a statement issued by the party’s Media and Communications Team on Saturday, May 16, 2026, Aja Sukaina Kah died in Senegal after decades of dedicated service to the UDP and the democratic struggle in The Gambia.

The party noted that Aja Sukaina Kah was among the founding members and most loyal supporters of the UDP since its establishment in 1996. She was widely regarded as a pillar of the party who remained steadfast during difficult periods of political repression and persecution.

UDP leader and Secretary General Ousainu Darboe, together with the party’s National Executive Committee and supporters across the country and diaspora, expressed profound sorrow over her passing.

The statement praised the late women’s leader for her courage, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to democracy, justice, and national service. It further highlighted her role in empowering women and strengthening the party throughout the years.

“She stood firm, fearless, and unwavering in her dedication to the UDP and the Gambian people,” the statement read.

The UDP described her as a mother, mentor, leader, and symbol of resilience whose sacrifices and contributions would never be forgotten.

The party also extended condolences to her family, loved ones, members of the Women’s Wing, supporters, and all Gambians mourning the loss.

Funeral arrangements, according to the party, will be announced later.
